1. Psalms - This is a great place to start if you're looking for encouragement. The Psalms offer hope, and healing, and help us to better understand that God is with us no matter our circumstances. I often suggest reading Psalms if stress and anxiety keep you up at night because the poetry style of writing is not only relatable, but also very comforting. My personal experience with mental illness was an example of where in my darkest moments, I was able to find hope in the word of God and seek out the saviour Lord Jesus Christ.
2.Genesis/Revelations If you want to read through the entire Bible in chronological order, Genesis is the place to go and Revelations talks about the future of humanity and the end times. Doing so will give you a better understanding of the Bible as a whole if you read both. Doing bible study and a sermon series is a better way of looking at the word then just reading the bible like a book. The bible is not normally intended to be read in one sitting. I made that noob mistake when I first picked up the bible. Inductive bible study is a good way of remembering important parts especially if you write verses and things down.
3. Romans - This is a good place to start if you want a clear understanding of the Gospel. I suggest every Christian read Romans to build confidence in the faith they profess. Since the entire Bible points to the Good News of Jesus Christ, this is certainly a good place to start.
I just want to say if you attend church regularly but not read the word, it will become a shortfall with God because you are not building that relationship with him. Any of the 4 gospels are also good to start if you want to get serious in taking the next step and do bible study because they are easier and feels less like a story and more on the importance of Jesus.
